Sunday, November 19 – naturalist Charles Hood

This week’s show (Sunday, 5 pm on KPFK 90.7 FM) is my second recorded with poet, writer, naturalist, photographer and teacher Charles Hood, whose most recently published creative work includes a long poetic novel, a second prizewinning collection and, the subject of today’s conversation,  a guidebook introducing beginners to the most easily seen bird species across our state, in urban, suburban, natural, even unnatural habitats.  With full-color photographs and colorful asides, A Californian’s Guide to the Birds Among Us is both a concise natural history and take-anywhere field guide, composed as perhaps only a poet and naturalist might assemble the world, no surprise to fans of Hood’s fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.  Out from Heyday, this guide is an essential volume for both newbies and veteran birders. Thanks for listening, and for supporting community radio.
