New day: Wednesday. New time: 2 PM. Brand new show, about a terrific new book co-edited by Jonathan Lethem and Kevin Dettmar, authors of Shake it Up: Great Writing on Rock and Pop from Elvis to Jay Z. They might easily enough have included their own writing, both Lethem and Dettmar having themselves contributed to the alternately celebratory, critical, apologetic, polemical or otherwise sincerely creative many-decades’ worth of smart, funny, provocative criticism produced around this art form. Indeed, the two editors of Shake it Up are formidable creative and critical writers themselves. They eschewed self-promotion and instead joined with the terrific folks at The Library of America to provide a go-to survey of the very best writing about rock and pop including so many familiar names but also introducing or boostering the work of new and historically perhaps underrepresented critical or fan voices. The list includes Lester Bangs, Amiri Baraka, Greil Marcus, Hilton Als, Eve Babitz and 45 more. Lethem has written celebrated novels, short-story collections, non-fiction and essays and been published in Rolling Stone, Harper’s and The New Yorker. Dettmar writes about and teaches British & Irish modernism, especially James Joyce, and contemporary popular music. A literary, music, and cultural critic, he has written for academic anthologies as well as The Atlantic Monthly and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Both teach at Pomona College, where taped this show. Thanks for listening. Play loud!
